What is Loestrin 24

Loestrin 24 is a tablet which is used as a contraception to prevent pregnancy. It is also sometimes used as a treatment for polycystic ovarian syndrome.

What Does Loestrin 24 Contain

Loestrin 24 is composed of ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone which are both forms of female hormones which are combined to prevent the ovulation process. Loestrin 24 also causes the changes in the cerivcal mucus production and uterine lining which makes it more difficult for the male sperm to arrive at the uterus thus making it more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterine wall.

Who Should Not Use Loestrin 24

Women who are already pregnant should not use Loestrin 24. Women who have recently given birth also should not use Loestrin 24. Anyone with the following medical conditions or illnesses should not use Loestrin 24 : a history of cardiac problems, such as stroke or heart disease, poor blood circulation, breast or uterine cancer, unusual vaginal bleeding, liver disease or liver cancer, a history of jaundice when using birth control pills. Consult your physician before taking Loestrin 24.

Loestrin 24 and Additional Birth Control Methods

When first taking the Loestrin 24 , use additional methods of birth control such as spermicide or condom as it takes time for the Loestrin 24 to build up in your system. A word of caution, taking hormones can increase your risk of blood clots, strokes and heart attacks especially for smokers and those over 35 years of age.

Loestrin 24 and OTC Medications

Even something as seemingly harmless as an herbal remedy can cause serious reactions when taking Loestrin 24. Always tell your doctor about prescription or non prescription drugs before taking Loestrin 24. Loestrin 24 can cause birth defects and this is why you should not take Loestrin 24 if you are pregnant. Let the doctor know if you have become pregnant while taking Loestrin 24 or if you have missed more than one period. If you have recently given birth, or are breast feeding, wait at least one month before taking Loestrin 24 as the hormones can possibly pass into the breast milk.

How to Take Loestrin 24

As with any medication, only take Loestrin 24 in the prescribed amount. Do not increase the dosage or take for extended periods of time beyond that prescribed by your doctor. Start taking the Loestrin 24 at the beginning of your period or on the following Sunday. The 28 day supply pack will contain a week’s supply of “reminder pills” to help keep a regular cycle. While taking these “reminder pills” you will have your period. Breakthrough bleeding may occur during the first 3 months of taking Loestrin 24. Be sure and let your doctor know if you have heavy bleeding. One pill daily is required every 24 hours. Usually these are taken every morning with food. When a refill is required, let your doctor know. Pregnancy may result if Loestrin 24 is not taken on a regular basis.
